Army Called In To Help Flood Victims

10 June 2013 -

Triggered by heavy rains, the Danube and other Austrian rivers have flooded, swamping entire villages. Many roads had to be closed and several rail services were disrupted after days of rain. The weather has left many parts of the country - particularly the western provinces of Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg, as well as northern Upper Austria - under flood alert.

3,700 Soldiers

Hundreds of fire fighters and emergency services have been mobilised to help the population. They are supported by more than 3,700 soldiers of the Austrian Armed Forces. The soldiers help to clear roads, assist with evacuations and put up anti-flood barriers.

Helicopters

In support of the ground crews, Army pilots are operating 14 helicopters conducting reconnaissance and evacuation missions.
