Chief of Defence Staff Retires from Service

On 30th November 2007 General Roland Ertl retired from the Austrian Armed Forces, where he most recently served as Chief of Defence Staff. Born in Bad Hall on 23rd July 1945, Roland Ertl served in the military for 41 years. In his capacity as Chief of Defence Staff he was the principal military advisor to the Minister of Defence and to the National Security Council.

Service in Austria and Abroad

Ertl fulfilled a variety of functions, both in Austria and abroad. Among other tasks, his military career took him to Austria's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and to the UNDOF headquarters in Syria. From 1999 to 2002 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Provincial Military Command, Salzburg.

Reform of the Forces

In December 2002, General Roland Ertl had been nominated Chief of Defence Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces. Since then he mainly concentrated on the ongoing reform of the Forces and the Ministry of Defence.
