Training Course for UN Peacekeeping Missions in Austria

18 May 2009 -

From 4th to 15th May 2009 potential leaders of the UN peacekeeping missions met in Vienna to attend the United Nation's "Senior Mission Leaders Course". This high-level training course was organised by the United Nation's Department of Peacekeeping Operations in collaboration with the Austrian Ministry of Defence and Sports.

Multinational Cooperation

At the Ministry's National Defence Academy, a total of 26 high-ranking officials from 19 member countries learned about multinational co-operation, ways of contacting people with different cultural background, and team-oriented leadership management. The training was designed for political, military, police and civilian leaders who might be called upon to serve in international peace operations.

Respect for Participants

In his closing speech, General Raimund Schittenhelm, the head of the Defence Academy, showed respect for all the participants. "Especially, for their willingness to place themselves at the UN's disposal - for such critical jobs," he told the audience.

In the Service of Peace

Since 1960, the Austrian Armed Forces have sent more than 70,000 soldiers to take part in international peacekeeping operations. About 1,200 Austrian soldiers are currently serving in missions abroad. Furthermore, from 2009 to 2010, Austria serves as a non-permanent member of the UN-Security Council.
