Bosnia: EUFOR Rescued Family out of Kalinovik

06 February 2012 -

During the night between 4 and 5 February, EUFOR was requested by Bosnian authorities to conduct an air rescue operation in the area of Kalinovik. There, a family of four (three adults and one child) had become cut off from civilization by heavy snowfall.

Search and Rescue Operation

On Monday, a search and rescue helicopter from Camp Butimr’s Austrian Helicopter Detachment was deployed. The helicopter crew started to reconnoitre the area of Kalinovik, and decided to evacuate the family immediately because of the good weather conditions. The three adults and child boarded the helicopter safely and were brought to Camp Butmir, where they underwent medical examination by EUFOR personnel before being taken to hospital.

Soldiers Clean Streets and Tracks

While this rescue operation took place, soldiers of the Multinational Battalion continued to clear streets and tracks of snow. Currently, they are concentrating on freeing the tramway tracks in the city of Sarajevo.
