Golan Heights: Wounded Soldiers Return Home Safely
Two Austrian peacekeeping soldiers wounded in a crossfire near Damascus, Syria, have returned home safely. They were flown to Linz-Hörsching by an Austrian Armed Forces' C-130 "Hercules". Their condition is described as not life-threatening.
On Their Way to Austria
Together with other members of the UNDOF force on the Golan Heights, the two soldiers were on their way to Damascus airport for a flight home when their convoy was caught in crossfire between Syrian government troops and rebel fighters. Both suffered gunshot wounds. One soldier, aged 25, was shot in the arm and his 53-year-old comrade hit in the shoulder. Both were quickly treated by an accompanying doctor.
Six-Month Stint Completed
The two soldiers were later transferred to an Israeli hospital for further treatment, before beeing flown back to Austria. Meanwhile, more than 100 Austrian peacekeepers returned to Vienna as scheduled after completing their six-month duty on the Golan Heights.
