Armed Forces Deploy to Help With Refugee Crisis

18 September 2015 -

More than 1,200 members of the Austrian Armed Forces are currently deploying to help with the influx of thousands of refugees. Their tasks include humanitarian aid as well as border controls.

Soldiers Support Authorities and Aid Organisations

Army units are closing the gap where overstretched authorities and aid organisations can no longer cope with the increasing numbers of refugees arriving in Austria. The soldiers help by transporting people and equipment, constructing accommodation and providing food.

Joint Border Duties

In addition, specially trained and ready-to-go units have started to assist the local police. In various areas, policemen and servicemen are jointly conducting border duties.

Army Helicopters Provide Aerial Reconnaissance

Within the next few days, Army helicopters equipped with infrared night vision devices will support authorities and troops with aerial reconnaissance capabilities.
