Abstract:

Pedro Candia, diocesan administrator of the Argentine military ordinariate, indicated that conscription was in place in Argentina from 1901 to 1994. It contributed to the formation of the nation and to the development of the bourgeoisie and made access to educational institutions and health care possible for young people. Since 1994, Argentina’s soldiers may choose to serve their country on a voluntary basis. Independent of whether you have conscription or a professional force, the point is to understand the military profession as a calling. From the Christian perspective, this calling is based on love, because "no one loves his home country because it is great, but because it is his home country” (Seneca). To serve your home country is an act of Christian love towards your neighbour, because it means protecting the society in which you live or in which you grew up. In particular, military pastoral care has to look after the special needs of those women and men who render this service.
