Abstract:

Military chaplaincy in Germany is confronted with new challenges due to the current structural reforms of the Bundeswehr and wants to optimise military chaplaincy for the benefit of the soldiers and their families. The structures within the Bundeswehr and the total number of soldiers will be reduced; currently there are still approx. 90 posts for Roman Catholic military chaplains (priests and lay pastors). Military pastors celebrate the masses, administer the sacraments and are close to the men and women by talking to them. Together with the lay pastors they teach the "lebenskundlicher Unterricht” (instructions on life), which is compulsory for all soldiers and is meant to build a common soldierly basis of values for the soldiers’ actions.
