Abstract:
F. Xavier Yu Soo II, military bishop of South Korea, gave an overview of the history and current situation of Catholic pastoral care in his country. The significance of military pastoral care for the Church can be deduced from the over 380,000 Catholics whom military pastors baptised in the past 60 years, making up 7.4 per cent of all Catholics in South Korea. Military pastoral care also played an eminent role in the evangelisation efforts in South Korea. In addition to 272 Protestant and 136 Buddhist military pastors, 94 Catholic military pastors are active in the South Korean Armed Forces. They are supported by 35 religious sisters and 45 lay people. The number of pastors, however, is limited by the specifications imposed by the Ministry of Defence and the multi-confessional military pastoral authority. Great challenges are the brief period of time available for baptismal preparation of the soldiers during basic training and the very frequent transfers of career soldiers. The introduction of an all-volunteer force in South Korea does not really make sense for that purpose. The reasons for this are the constant threat posed by North Korea, the high costs of an all-volunteer force and the low birth rate.
