The EU and the Inclusion of a Collective Defence Clause
The chapter brings up the existing collective defence clauses within NATO and the WEU. Thereafter it deals with the issue of what scopes of membership would be feasible when introducing such a clause within the EU. considering the existing NATO guarantee. The chapter furthermore elaborates on what possible kinds of developments might lead to the inclusion of such a clause.
Important factors in this are the different kinds of conceptions among states as to what a collective defence clause means and the different priorities of these states. Finally the military criteria associated with a collective defence clause are considered.
