Norbert Mappes-Niediek has been a correspondent for South East Europe since the beginning of the post-Yugoslav wars. He writes for various newspapers in German and Dutch. During the Bihac crisis in Bosnia, in 1993/94, he temporarily worked as a political analyst on the staff of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Zagreb. In 2004/2005, he was a spokesman for the Bundestag, the German parliament in Berlin. He has published several books on South East European and Austrian issues, such as "Die Ethno-Falle” (The Ethnic Trap) in 2005, "Balkan-Mafia” in 2003, and "Kroatien, Das Land hinter der Adria-Kulisse” (Croatia, The Country Behind the Adriatic Backdrop) in 2009.
