Lebenslauf

He studied at the Faculty of Sociology, Political Studies and Journalism at the University of Ljubljana (now the Faculty of Social Sciences), where he graduated in defence science and sociology. He continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Maryland in the USA, and was a guest researcher at Tafts University - The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, as well as making study visits to the following American universities: George Washington, New Mexico, Yale, Stanford and Georgetown.
After 1980, he was employed at the Faculty of Social Studies in Ljubljana, where he was responsible for various subjects at graduate and postgraduate levels (Defence and security systems, Comparative defence systems, Security in international relations and Comparative foreign military systems).
From 1989 until 1994 he was Head of Defence Science Courses at the Faculty of Social Studies, from 1991 until 1995, Vice-Dean for financial affairs at the same Faculty, and from
1992 until 2000 the Head of the faculty’s Defence Science Research Centre.
Between 1999 and 2000 he was also the President of the Strategic Council at the Ministry of Defence.
As a researcher, Dr. Grizold has led many research projects since 1983, the most important being: National security of Slovenia, Senior staff in the Slovenian armed forces, Slovenian soldier - the members of the Territorial Defence during armed conflicts in Slovenia, The present and future of the military profession in Europe and European security integration. He has written more than one hundred academic, professional and popular articles related to security, defence, war and peace, published in journals, collections of papers and books at home and abroad. He is also the author of four and co-author of three books: Militarizacija in voja¹ko-industrijski kompleks (Militarisation and the Military-Industrial Complex)(1990), Meðunarodna sigurnost (International Security) (1998), Evropska varnost (European Security) (1999), Obrambni sistem Republike Slovenije (Defence System of the Republic of Slovenia) (1999), Suvremeni sistemi nacionalne sigurnosti (Contemporary Systems of National Security) (co-author, 1999), Varnostne politike velesil (Security Policies of the Superpowers)(co-author, 2000) and Èlovek, dr¾ava in vojna (Man, the State and War)(co-author of the introductory study, 2001).
On November 30, 2000, he was appointed Minister of Defense, Republic of Slovenia.

At present he is Professor at the University of Lubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences
