International Workshop on Computer Based Assessment

Das Bundesministerium für Landesverteidigung ist von 10. bis 13. Juni Gastgeber eines internationalen Workshops zum Thema "FROM COMPUTER BASED ASSESSMENT TO AUGMENTED COGNITION". Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Heerespsychologen im In- und Ausland und wird in Wien ausgetragen.

Additional Information:

This workshop will be held at Vienna, from June 10th - 13th, 2002. This workshop is being co-hosted by The Austrian Military Psychological Service and the Office of Naval Research. The theme of the workshop is:

FROM COMPUTER BASED ASSESSMENT TO AUGMENTED COGNITION

The workshop is intended as an opportunity to share international experiences in the field of computer based assessment and to inform about and to discuss current advances of computerized test systems & standardization efforts. In addition, knowledge about the application of augmented cognition tools to facilitate decision making will be presented. The program will be held as plenary sessions and workshops. It will include original scientific papers, scientific contributions, professional papers, reviews, case reports, and preliminary reports. Main topics of the symposium are defined as follows:

  • Computer Based Assessment: Flaws In Current Implementations, Ways To Improve
  • Standardized Interfaces: Foster Exchanges Of Procedures
  • Human Computer Symbiosis: Augmented Cognition

A First Draft Of Questions to be Discussed at the Workshop:

  • Instructions: What are the experiences with wordy instructions vs. compact interactive instructions?
  • How to handle the situation, where the parameters indicate insufficient understanding of a task after testing has started? What are the effects of additional instruction sequence? How are they handled within the various organizations and what is the effect on test results?
  • Adaptive Testing: What are the problems we encounteres applying specific models for adaptive testing?
  • Advantages / disadvantages of various algorithms (using a warm-up sequence, just following maximum information paradigm...)?
  • Are there any measures of person fit in use, what are the models used and what are the experiences made?
  • What procedures are used to improve the item pools used? How is seeding (insertion of new items that are in the state of development) handled?
  • Application of Standards / Integration of External Products
  • What do users know about standardization efforts? Are existing or growing standards concerning internal item or results representation regarded? Is there a need for such standards?
  • How do organizations handle the integration of procedures / tests from other institutions?
  • User interfaces, Input Devices, Interaction
  • Use of standard Windows user interfaces and input devices vs. usage of specific simple interfaces and devices?
  • What can testing experts learn from experts in the field of augmented cognition?

Participants:

Each country may send up to two representatives to attend the workshop. Participants should be employed by their defence establishments as researchers or administrators of research on military issues. Participants are expected to actively contribute to the discussion groups in the workshop sessions. This will be an unclassified workshop that will be conducted in English. Participants who would like to attend the meeting and not give a presentation are welcome. Please submit your registration via e-mail or via Fax No: + 43 1 5200 17564.
