Abstract:
In the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Caspian region became an area of competition for influence, especially among the major regional powers. This rivalry was most clear over the issues surrounding the Caspian oil. Russia, Turkey and Iran engaged in a struggle to increase their role in the transportation of this oil. This article examines the developments in this rivalry and argues for the need for cooperation in the region.
