Professor of Military Pedagogy at the Finnish National Defense College.
As a former Army officer, he studied education, sociology, ethnology, and philosophy at the University of Turku where he received his Ph.D. in 1993.
In his focus to develop military pedagogy as a scientific discipline, Dr. Toiskallio has laid his main interest on the interrelations between educational theory, philosophy, and sociology.
He is currently establishing a networked research center for Action Competence, Identity, and Ethics (ACIE).
Among recent publications feature contributions such as Pedagogy of the Postmodernity (‘01, only in Finnish) and Being a Soldier in 2020? in Cultures, Values and Future Soldiers (‘02, in English).
