Vorwort
In view of the increasingly eroding international security system, cooperation in Europe and with its geopolitical environment based on stable democratic foundations and human and civil rights appears to be of paramount importance. The European Union (EU) plays a key role as an important integrative political organisation. Authoritarian developments in some of the candidate countries challenge the EU’s fundamental democratic values and increase the room for manoeuvre of competing third countries.
